Event review

On Thursday 24 October, BMRA’s Policy and Sustainability Manager, Cameron Leitch travelled along the A14 to attend AMCS Group’s Performance Sustainability in Action event in Birmingham.

For AMCS Group, a BMRA service member, it was an opportunity to showcase its portfolio of products which can support an organisation in its sustainability journey. For BMRA, it was all about gaining insight and drilling down into how exactly how its ordinary members can benefit.

BMRA’s research suggests around half of emissions that are under the operational control of the metal recycler, can be found in the diesel used its mobile fleet (if it has one). Nascent technologies such as electrified skip wagons and electrified rigid trucks are emerging on the market, but these are limited in supply. For 6-axle articulated vehicles, I am yet to find a commercially proven solution which dramatically lowers the operating emissions.

As a result, for BMRA members looking to reduce the emissions associated with their mobile fleet now, AMCS Group’s telematics and fleet maintenance products could play a role. Irrespective of your fleet size, any BMRA member can purchase a telematics system and install it into one of their mobile vehicles. The system will increase your overall visibility over the vehicle and importantly from a sustainability perspective will supply you with idling data to increase fuel efficiency.

For members with a fleet of 30 vehicles or more, implementing a fleet maintenance system, like AMCS Group’s, may be worthwhile as it can save costs on consumables, reduce breakdowns and prevent call outs. The system can also lead to incremental emission reductions. This is because consumables like oil lubricants, carry embedded emissions in the production of the product, and every breakdown call out will very likely carry upstream transportation emissions in getting the repairer to site.

Further incremental emission reduction can be found in solutions like AMCS Group’s enterprise resource planning software. Bespoke to the metals recycling industry, this product digitises your operations. This will naturally lead to a reduction in paper use. However, if the platform can streamline your operations, and lead to a reduction in overall operational energy usage, significantly less emissions will be generated.

Thank you to AMCS Group for taking the time to put on this event and giving insight into how their products can lead to emission reductions within the metals recycling industry. If you’re interested in learning more about AMCS Group, find out more here - www.amcsgroup.com
