Analysis system for enhanced operational efficiency

BMRA service member, Lindemann Metal Recycling, has announced the expansion and development of its innovative InDEx (Intelligent Data

Exchange) monitoring and analysis system, designed to revolutionise operational efficiency in the metal recycling industry. This cutting-edge system offers real-time data logging, performance monitoring, and analytical insights, making it a game changer for operational management.

Developed in collaboration with a leading Austrian tech specialist, InDEx provides users with real-time access to detailed performance data from their Lindemann machines, including shears, shredders, and, starting in 2025, balers. By logging and analyzing comprehensive operational data, InDEx gives managers the ability to optimize machine utilisation, reduce downtime, and improve productivity.

“InDEx takes the guesswork out of machine monitoring,” said Krischan Wolters, Manager of Product Management and Development at Lindemann. “It’s not just about troubleshooting from a distance; it’s about converting raw data into meaningful information that can be used to maximise machine output and minimise downtime.”

Unlike traditional manual methods of performance tracking, which relied heavily on paperwork, InDEx collects and processes data automatically from the Siemens S7 PLCs fitted on Lindemann machines. This data is then sent to a secure, cloud-based server, where users can access and analyse performance metrics via any web browser or mobile device. Whether on-site or remotely, yard managers can monitor machine usage, track downtime causes, and even compare operator performance with ease.

Features of InDEx:

  • Real-time monitoring: Operators can track machine utilisation and identify reasons for downtime in real-time.
  • Data insights: InDEx delivers detailed reports on material processed, downtime causes, and machine health, helping managers make informed decisions to improve operational efficiency.
  • Global accessibility: The cloud-based system can be accessed from any device with internet connectivity, allowing users to monitor their equipment from anywhere in the world.
  • User-friendly interface: With compatibility across iOS, Android, and all major web browsers, the system is simple to use and requires minimal training.
  • Health InDEx feature: The system also includes a health index that monitors machine condition and provides maintenance recommendations based on real-time performance data.

The launch of InDEx marks a milestone for Lindemann as the company becomes the first in the metal recycling equipment industry to offer a proprietary end-to-end monitoring system tailored to their machines. By eliminating the laborious, manual process of performance tracking and providing actionable insights, InDEx allows recycling facilities to significantly improve machine utilisation and profitability.

“With InDEx, we’re providing a solution that empowers customers to enhance their operations in a truly measurable way,” Wolters adds. “By identifying bottlenecks and reducing downtime, operators can increase production output and see a rapid return on investment.”

InDEx is available as an option on all new Lindemann machines and can be retrofitted to existing equipment with a straightforward installation process. The system is designed for scalability and will soon support additional machine features, including AI-based enhancements. Users can extend their InDEx license annually after an initial installation and two-year subscription period.

As the metal recycling industry continues to evolve, Lindemann’s InDEx system stands out as a forward-thinking solution designed to drive efficiency, sustainability, and profitability for operators worldwide.
