It’s September, so it must be showtime!

BMRA once again supported the event and exhibited at the annual resource, waste and recycling event, RWM, at the NEC on 11 and 12 of September.

It also was the venue for the UK Metals Expo, the event that brings the entire metals supply chain together with engineering, manufacturing and construction.

Conference

Cameron Leitch, Lee Scarth, Mike Hogan

BMRA’s Policy and Public Affairs team, Antonia Grey and Cameron Leitch were both on the agenda at each event.

Cameron hosted a panel alongside Mike Hogan of BMRA member, EMR and Lee Scarth of BMRA Sustainability Partner, Vattenfall discussing ‘Decarbonising the waste sector: Experiences of the metals recycling sector’.

During the panel they discussed what the BMRA is doing to support members via its Sustainability Hub, while Mike discussed EMR’s decarbonisation journey in particular recent developments in the wind turbine value chain.

The 'Scrap Shake-up' panel at UK Metals Expo

Lee spoke about how the industry can embrace electrification via cost efficient grid connections.

Antonia spoke alongside EMR, Tata Steel, Celsa Recycling and SUSTAIN at Swansea University about the 'Scrap Shake-up! The New Era of Scrap and Raw Materials in the UK Supply Chain'.

Within that session the need to look at adapting scrap supply chains to meet the new demands of the UK steel industry as it transitions to Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs).

Industry champions recognised

The event also saw the inaugural Environment 100 recognised. The award is given to environmental leaders and sustainability champions.

Mitchell Garner and Susie Burrage OBE

BMRA President, Susie Burrage OBE of Recycled Products Ltd was named alongside YBMR co-chair, Mitchell Garner of Sims Metal. Bill Firth of BMRA member, EMR was also named in the 100.

2025 and beyond

Next year will see the Metals Recycling Event (MRE) and Car Recycling Show (CARS) move from its Stoneleigh home in May, to be part of RWM and the wider Environmental Services and Solutions Show on 10 and 11 September at the NEC. This show will be far more relevant to BMRA members and alongside the UK Metals Expo will ensure a full day of meeting with fellow metal recyclers as well as the wider industry.
